The short version. CurbCues has no account and no sign-up. It does not track you, show ads, or sell anything. Your location is used to answer the question you asked — by pressing a button or by asking Siri — and it is not stored on any server run by us.
What CurbCues collects
Nothing is collected about you personally. There is no account, no email address, no advertising identifier, and no analytics package in the app.
How your location is used
When you press a button, or ask Siri, the app reads your location and compass heading from your iPhone and uses them to look up an answer. That is the only reason location is ever requested.
Your location is not written to a file, a database, or a server that we control. Once an announcement is spoken, the coordinates are gone. CurbCues does not record, log, or track where you have been.
Location while the app is not on screen
CurbCues declares the location and audio background modes. This is what lets Siri answer “what’s my nearest intersection in CurbCues” while your phone is locked or in your pocket. Without it, iOS stops delivering location to the app the moment it leaves the screen, and the app cannot speak at all — which would make the Siri feature useless for the people it is built for.
Location is read only to answer a request you made. The app does not follow you in the background, and it does not collect location when you have not asked it anything. iOS shows a blue indicator in the status bar whenever an app is using your location while not on screen, so you can always tell.
The permission CurbCues asks for is While Using the App. It does not request “Always” access.
Services the app talks to
To answer a question, CurbCues sends your approximate coordinates to two services. Both receive only the coordinates needed for that one lookup.
Apple
The Address and Food buttons use Apple’s geocoding and place search, built into iOS. Apple’s handling of those requests is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.
OpenStreetMap
The Intersection button queries the Overpass API, a public service operated by volunteers of the OpenStreetMap project, to find nearby street corners. Your coordinates are sent as part of that query. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.
Siri
If you ask Siri for your location through CurbCues, Apple processes the spoken request. CurbCues receives only which of the three questions you asked. Siri’s own handling of your voice is covered by the Apple Privacy Policy. Answers are spoken by CurbCues itself rather than by Siri.
What is stored on your iPhone
Two settings are saved on your device so they survive a restart: how often repeated announcements are made, and your speech speed. They stay on the phone, are not sent anywhere, and are deleted when you delete the app.
Children
CurbCues is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change. If a future version were to collect anything, that would be described here before the version was released.
